For Independent Contractors traveling overseas there are some additional responsibilities. As a TigerSwan IC, you may not hand carry or ship overseas items such as your own body armor, helmets, and weapons (to include weapon parts such as magazines) without first discussing and obtaining authorization from Tom Wright. You may want to provide Tom a list of all items you intend to take — including personal computers with software programs listed to ensure you are not accidently violating any U.S. regulations.
Should you decide to order such equipment on your own from internet vendors (Ranger Joe's, Brigade Quartermaster, etc.) you would be acting in your capacity as an individual citizen and would be required to comply with all applicable U.S. laws and regulations to the export transaction contemplated by such a purchase. This means you will be held responsible for those actions if there is a violation of U.S. Export regulations. For example, you should ask the vendor if the items to be purchased require an Export license to leave the U.S.
TigerSwan also recommends you ask vendors if they are registered with the U.S. Department of State, Directorate of Defense Trade Controls as an exporter of these types of items.
Exporters that are not registered with the Department of State may be in violation of U.S. Export regulations. ICs should be cautious when considering exporting their own gear — and should confirm in their IC contract that such an action is authorized under the terms of their contract.
Be aware to take caution if a vendor states "we ship these items to APO addresses all the time without an Export license". You will be held liable for any actions taken as an individual that contemplates export of items that require an export authorization if you attempt to purchase and ship equipment that is not authorized by TigerSwan.
