 Technical data can be as simple as a drawing of the internal workings of a firearm to the classified instructions on how to launch a Maverick missile. Training class curriculum can be controlled as technical data, depending on the contents of the material.

While the concept of technical data may seem easy to understand at first, the determination as to what constitutes technical data and what does not can be complex and difficult to navigate. Your compliance professional should be the only person in the organization making that determination.

For example, there is a fine line between what curriculum would be considered controlled in a training class and what would not. Some government personnel believe that training a foreign party on physical fitness techniques could be controlled. Or that basic ethics training to a Foreign National should be as controlled as Close Quarter Battle information. To ensure that you or your organization does not exceed the authorizations you may have obtained, always make sure the compliance person in your company is familiar with what your projects are and what you intend to share with any foreign party.
